Created in Houdini 19.5.303 LC using booleans, retime nodes and some vex. Boolean has a "Seam" operation which came in handy. Hadn't used that before.
Came across the problem of using a detail reference in vex so posted here for reference

Adding some noise to the green cubes (this one I did in a point wrangle, the commute one with the usual mountain node)
Also used retime to create a cycle
Finally, cull to camera (there is an example file on the tip and tricks page). Here I also add a clip node to get rid of geometry animated to be below the ground plane.
